Chris Waltham
This, my 10th “regular” instrument, is based on Heron-Allen’s Stradivarius plans, and using Henry Strobel’s arching guides. For graduating the plates, I used tap tones to aim for the mode frequencies recommended in Erik Jansson’s Acoustics for Violin and Guitar Makers.
The main departure from my other instruments is that I got really lucky buying wood for the plates. Bow River Woods in Chilliwack BC had a beautiful matched pair of quilted maple back pieces marked “For New York”. However, the New Yorker who had ordered the wood had long since gone AWOL, and so I got it.
